Dance Class Descriptions for 2016-7

Tap Dance

This quintessentially American dance style returns to Homer courtesy of instructor Anne Gittinger. Students will stomp, scoop, and brush their way through class, learning all about the steps, rhythms and styles of tap. In addition to our regular tap dance classes for beginning and intermediate dancers, younger learners can start their dance journey with our combination ballet and tap dance classes.

Creative Dance/Kids 'N Motion

This year, our Creative Dance program has been expanded to include students aged 3 through 10 years old.  Instructor Kara Clemens introduces her young pupils to a joyful, positive form of expressive dance.  Have fun while exploring movement concepts, developing dance skills, strengthening the body and brain, and interacting with others.

Classical Ballet

Participants in our Ballet Program learn progressively in a formal class environment.  Emphasizing injury prevention and dance longevity, ballet instructor Natalie Betley utilizes her training with dance physiotherapist Lisa Howell to bring classical ballet together with modern kinesthesiology. Anne Gittinger's extensive classical training and ongoing work with local dance productions informs her classtime emphasis on fundamental technique, with a truly classical approach to a polished presentation. All classes direct students in proper alignment and positioning, appropriate technique, classical terminology, musicality, and performance etiquette. Pre-pointe and pointe students should visit our Pointe resource page for more information.

Lyrical Dance

An elegant fusion of ballet and jazz dance elements, our Lyrical Dance classes are taught by Natalie Betley.  Students will work on their fundamental dance technique, learn modern choreography and develop artistic expression through movement.

Hip Hop

The HSMD approach to Hip Hop is family-friendly and fun.  Students learn various Hip Hop dance styles in a structured and energetic environment with age-appropriate music and choreography.
